Almost everyone has experienced feelings of homesickness at some point. To miss the comfort of home and our friends and family is completely normal. Familiarity provides a sense of security, so it’s common to miss these things when we are in a new place. If you start to feel homesick while travelling, these 7 easy tips will help cheer you up.
1. Pack something familiar
Since we tend to prefer the familiar and the comfortable, pack something that reminds you of home. Bring items that have special significance for you, items that you associate with good memories of your family and friends. If you find yourself feeling homesick, you will have that small piece of home to make you feel better.
2. Talk to someone
Find someone you are comfortable talking to and let them know how you feel. You may find out that you aren’t the only one feeling homesick, and sometimes just talking about something makes all the difference.
3. Stay busy
If you are having fun, chances are you won’t be thinking about how much you miss home. You won’t have any trouble staying busy while on tour, so make the most of it. Make an effort to meet new people and take in as much culture as you can. Concentrate on having an amazing trip and time will fly!
4. Keep in touch
An easy way to cure homesickness is to talk to your family or friends back home. You don’t want to spend your entire tour on your phone, but a quick text message or phone call can make all the difference. Once you start telling them about all the amazing things you are doing, you might even forget all about being homesick.
5. Think positive
Don’t get too frustrated or upset if you start missing home. Even if the first night is a little tough, it will get better. Stay optimistic and focus on all of the amazing things you will be doing on tour. You will be having so much fun, you will forget all about your homesickness.
6. Enjoy your trip
The worst thing you can do is dwell on being homesick and miss out on all the great activities going on around you. Immerse yourself in your tour. Have fun with your friends. If you do this, it will be really easy to stay positive and enjoy your time away.
7. Be healthy
It’s really important to eat well and get a good night’s sleep. If you aren’t staying healthy, it will affect your physical well-being and your emotional health, which could lead to increased feelings of homesickness. You want to feel your best while on tour so you can enjoy every minute. Be as healthy as possible while you’re away and you’ll have a great time!
