What Will Your Stroke of Genius Be?

Do you have an inspiring, innovative idea that you want to share with the world? EF has just launched its third annual Global Citizen Scholarship, an award that recognizes remarkable students who are on their way to becoming the leaders of tomorrow. We want you to tell us what you’re passionate about and what makes you extraordinary for a chance to become a 2015 Global Citizen.

Ten extraordinary students from across Canada will be joining us on a once-in-a-lifetime journey to Paris, Toulouse and Barcelona, where they will have the opportunity to participate in immersive educational and cultural experiences including EF’s Leadership & Innovation Summit in March 2015. As a Global Citizen, you will:

  • Experience the culture of Paris at a cooking class in one of the city’s world-acclaimed culinary schools, as well as at a painting class taught by a local Parisian artist.
  • Visit UNESCO house in Paris.
  • Visit Europe’s largest aeronautical plant, the Airbus factory, in Toulouse.
  • Get inspired at the Leadership & Innovation Summit in Barcelona as you work with your peers to identify potential solutions to global issues. You’ll also hear from some of the world’s most creative and innovative minds, including English physicist, former musician and keynote speaker Dr. Brian Cox
  • Take part in a molecular gastronomy class where you’ll explore the physical and chemical transformations of ingredients that occur to create delectable magic.

Here’s how to apply:

  1. Think about your #EFextraordinary story.
  2. Review the complete project guidelines and the terms and conditions.
  3. Create a video, multimedia presentation or essay that responds to the prompt.
  4. Click here to start your application.

In your application, we want you to share your thoughts on the following:

Not everything has been invented yet, not every problem solved—how will your innovative ideas lead positive change in the world today? Innovation is about taking something that already exists and changing it for the better. EF is passionate about encouraging students to make the world a better place, one extraordinary idea at a time.

Think of a topic that you are passionate about such as food, energy, transportation, design or the environment.

  • Why are you passionate about your topic?
  • What innovative idea do you have to make an impact in your chosen topic area?
  • How would you get others excited about your idea?
  • How will participating in the Global Citizen Scholarship tour help you fuel your passion and bring new ideas back home?

What is your favourite memory from the 2014 Global Citizen Scholarship tour?

I have many! Speakers Corner gave us an amazing opportunity to practice public speaking, which is an important skill for leaders. The keynote speech from Roberta Bondar was also highly inspirational. The visit to Dachau provoked many reflections that will follow me throughout the rest of my life.

– Chloé Guilbert-Savary, Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures, QC

If I had to choose one, I think it would be fist bumping with Dr. Roberta Bondar. When I introduced myself, I said, “Hi, I’m Allison, and you’re actually on our town mural!” to which she responded, “Oh, are you from Aurora?” As you can probably imagine, my heart skipped not one beat, but probably several thousand. Here was a person that I’d done several projects on and looked up to as a child (literally, she’s painted pretty high up on that wall) that had suddenly materialized and was speaking to me about one of my greatest passions—science.

– Allison Kondal, Aurora, ON

Getting to meet and spend time with 9 other really cool, awesome, and like-minded people.

– Romeo Tello, Toronto, Ontario

How has taking part in this tour further developed you as a Global Citizen?

It helps to know that there are other people my age that are just as—or even more—passionate about trying to change the world for the better. It’s great that I’ve developed a strong network of friends and learned even more about who I am.

– Alex Whitney, Miramichi, NB

It’s fundamentally changed how I view the world. I see things with a greater perspective, and try to look at things with an even more open mind. It’s also taught me a lot about who I am as a person, and the types of things I want to do in the future.

If you could send a message to a student who is thinking about applying for this year’s Global Citizen Scholarship, what would it say?

My message would go a little like this: Hey! So I hear you’re thinking about applying for EF’s Global Citizen Scholarship! Well, I think you should do it. Just do it. I never thought that I would ever get to go on such an amazing adventure, but I applied, and was lucky enough to be chosen as a participant. You see, the trip itself was great. Amazing sights, great adventure, and a whole lot of fun. But, I must say, what was really unique about it was the really great people I met on the trip, and the memories made that will last a lifetime. To me, the trip wasn’t all about getting to go to cool places, and seeing really cool things (although that was an epic chunk of it). It was really about who I was able to do those things with, and the way it happened. The Global Citizen Scholarship was one of the greatest things I have ever done in my life, and I know that you’d honestly love it. By applying, you get a chance that may become one of the greatest experiences in your life. You’ll come back with a new sense of energy, new friends, new ideas, and a whole lot of memories and inside jokes that you’ll share with a cool set of people. So, do it. Apply. This is an opportunity you can’t miss out on! And, if you win, you’ll thank me later :).
